How this works: the spell checking is your browser's

The red underlines — and the right-click fixes — come from your own browser's built-in spellchecker, the same one you get in any text box on the web. We deliberately ship no dictionary and send your text nowhere.

Why: it keeps your writing on your device (no uploads, no third-party service), and it keeps this page tiny — a bundled engine and English dictionary is about 600 KB, roughly twice everything else this site ships, and covers only one language. The trade-off, stated plainly: the browser exposes no way for us to ask which words it flagged, so we cannot list misspellings or fix them for you. The checks below are the ones we can do without a dictionary.

    What the mechanical checks are

    • Repeated words — the the
    • Doubled spaces — two or more spaces between words
    • A space before punctuation — word ,
    • A missing space after ! or ? — Really?Yes
    • A lone lower-case "i" — usually meant to be "I"
    • A sentence that may need a capital — after a full stop, question or exclamation
    • Trailing whitespace — invisible spaces at the end of a line

    What it deliberately can't do

    List your misspellings

    Your browser knows which words it flagged; it just doesn't tell the page. So we can't show that list or offer one-click fixes.

    Check grammar

    Grammar needs a rules engine, or a service that sees your text. Out of scope for a page that keeps everything local.

    Guess what you meant

    Suggestions need a dictionary and frequency data — that's the ~600 KB we chose not to ship.

    Frequently asked questions

    Two reasons. Your browser deliberately keeps its spell-check results to itself — there is no API for a page to read them. And we chose not to bundle our own dictionary, so we have no second opinion to offer. The underlines are yours to use; the list is not something we can see.

    No. Everything on this page runs in your browser. Your text is not posted to our server, not saved, and not sent to any dictionary or grammar service. The page makes no network requests beyond loading its own files.

    That is down to your browser: add the language under its spell-check settings and the underlines follow. The page marks the text area as English (lang="en") so dictionaries that support several languages pick the right one. This is a real advantage of using the browser: there is no dictionary for us to ship, and every language you already have already works.

    Because it is heavy and narrow. An engine plus an English dictionary is roughly 600 KB — about twice the size of everything else this site ships — and it covers a single language. It would also have to be downloaded before the tool was useful. Browsers already have spell checkers installed, offline and for free, so we use those instead.

    Privacy: this tool runs entirely in your browser and makes no network requests of its own. Nothing you type is sent to us or to anyone else.
