Which colour format should I use?

Format Looks like Use it for
HEX #3A6EA5 Anything on the web — CSS, HTML, design tools, Slack and brand tokens. It is the format designers and developers both understand.
RGB 58, 110, 165 Screens: image editors, canvas code, display settings, anything that mixes light. Each channel runs 0–255.
CMYK 65, 33, 0, 35 Print: ink coverage on a press. Ask for it when a printer requests CMYK values, and expect them to be adjusted to the actual press profile.

HEX and RGB are two spellings of the same thing — both describe light on a screen, and converting between them is exact. CMYK is different: it describes ink, and the conversion depends on the paper, the press and the colour profile. The numbers here are a plain mathematical conversion, not a colour-managed one.

Both tools run entirely in your browser. Nothing you type or pick is sent anywhere, which is the main reason they exist — the popular alternatives are usually behind a sign-up.

Frequently asked questions

They are the same three numbers written differently. #3A6EA5 is base-16 shorthand for red 58, green 110, blue 165 — the same colour as rgb(58, 110, 165). Converting between them is exact, which is why the picker can update both fields as you type.

Only for ink. If you are sending artwork to a printer, a signage company or a merchandise supplier and they ask for CMYK, this is a quick way to get a starting point. For anything on a screen — including print-ready PDFs you export yourself — stay in HEX or RGB and let the output profile do the conversion.

Because those applications convert through a colour profile (FOGRA, SWOP and friends) that describes how ink behaves on a particular paper and press. This tool uses the plain mathematical conversion, so expect a few percent of difference. Use these numbers for a rough idea; use the profile for production.

No. Colours are read and written as six-digit hex or three RGB numbers, with no alpha channel — so an eight-digit #RRGGBBAA value is not understood. If you need rgba(), take the RGB values from the picker and add the alpha yourself.

No. The conversion runs in your browser, and the shades gallery ships its data inside the page. Neither tool needs a server, so neither sends anything anywhere.
