SHADES OF GREEN

All green shades sorted by hex code · 583 colors (98 named + 485 unnamed)

Data sourced from Colors Explained.

What this page is

Every green in the dataset, sorted by hex code so that neighbouring shades sit next to each other. It mixes two kinds of green: the 98 greens with established names — British racing green, Castleton green, Pakistan green — and 485 unnamed greens that fill the gaps between them. When you need a green that is slightly darker than one you like, the unnamed steps are the useful part; when you need a colour you can describe to somebody else, the named ones are.

Reading a swatch

Each square shows the name when it has one, then the HEX code, the RGB triplet and the CMYK values. The text switches between white and black per swatch so it stays legible on light and dark greens alike.

Using a shade

Copy the HEX code into your stylesheet or design tool — that is the value everything understands. The RGB numbers are the same colour written differently, and the CMYK values are a screen-to-ink approximation.

Judging green on a screen

Vivid greens look far brighter than their codes suggest, because the eye is most sensitive in the middle of the spectrum. If you are putting text on a green, check the contrast rather than trusting how it looks on your monitor.

Sorting by hex puts the dark, desaturated greens first and the bright yellow-greens last, so scrolling is a reasonable way to browse. Ctrl+F (or Cmd+F) also works for the named shades, because their names are part of the page.

The 98 named greens

The grid at the top of the page is drawn by JavaScript and covers all 583 greens. This is the named subset written out as plain text, so you can read it, search it with your browser's find, or copy a value even if scripts are blocked. Copy the HEX code — that is the value a stylesheet or design tool wants.

Frequently asked questions

The names come from the Shades of Green list at Colors Explained, which is credited at the foot of the grid. Green shades that the list does not name are carried as well, which is where the unnamed entries and the 583 total come from.

Because colour naming is informal. A few hundred greens have names that enough people agree on, and the rest are just codes — there is no authority that christens every value. That is precisely why designers end up quoting hex codes instead of colour names: #00563F means exactly one colour on every screen, while “forest green” means whatever the person reading it happens to imagine.

They are a plain mathematical conversion, with no press profile behind them. Treat them as a rough idea of how much ink a colour needs, not as numbers to hand to a printer — a real workflow converts through a profile for the specific paper and press, and the result will differ by a few percent.

Not yet — there is no search box and no export, and that is a fair complaint. For now the list is sorted by hex code, and the browser's own find works for the named shades. The named greens are also written out as a table below the grid, so you can read or copy them without hunting through swatches.

For the full 583-swatch grid, yes — it is drawn in the browser from data stored in the page. The named greens below are plain HTML, and the colour picker next door converts any value you type, so there is a usable path either way.
